10/30/95: What’s New (October ’95)? It is always astonishing and gratifying to go back to an old familiar score and see something “new”--or, anyway, something hitherto unnoticed. Take a look at the metronome marking in the 12/8 section of the prelude to Butterfly’s Act II, Scene 2. Really think about it and consider how slow it is. Now try to find a performance that faithfully observes this indication. Better yet, come to Dallas and hear me do it.
